The park is progressing nicely with some big hits coming soon.

First off. Nice pictures.

Second off, I want to address a problem that has been affecting the whole Terrain Park and ski area industry for a while, but one that has been escalating more and more each year.

Terrain Park Safety and the Near necessity of a dedicated park slope with an individual park pass.

As Park riding becomes more and more popular, the congestion increases. One of the biggest dangers isn't the features themselves to an experienced rider. It is the individuals who are in places that they do not belong.

Imagine going off of a jump, with a blind landing. Doing a rotation and coming around and seeing a person skiing snow-plow style through the landing area.

http://media.newschoolers.com/uploads/member/videos/1170020690Sequence1.mov

Watch that video, and just imagine how badly that could've turned out.

I myself have had a number of close calls off of jumps at Kissing Bridge where a group of people cut across the landing from out of seemingly nowhere and it almost results in a dangerous collision.

Or the favorite of the people standing on the top of a landing just taking in the view. And the best is when you tell those people that they cannot stand there, you generally get a whole bunch of ignorance and attitude spewed right into your face.

Or the young children with their parents who are stumbling all over the takeoffs to the jumps so their kid can slide down the backside of the jump. Not even realizing how dangerous a place they are standing.

A well designed entrance to the terrain park, as well as a simple one-time $10-$15 fee, with a short video on park ettiquette for season-long use of the Terrain Park will improve the experience of all riders immensely.

The park users will have a less congested park with only experienced riders who know the rules of the terrain park and the etiquette.

And the safety of all the users of the area will be that much greater. As well as the funds generated from the park pass system can be put back into the park.

Bottom-line. The terrain park is not a playground and it certainly is not a place for inexperienced snow-sliders to be playing around. And ski areas need to start being pro-active when it comes to terrain park etiquette before a major incident with substantial injuries occurs.

The snow is great, the park is building up daily and no warm up is in site. This bickering is just too much. If you have a compliment or complaint, voice it and move on, if you disagree with anothers opinion state your own and leave his or her opinion out of it. Endless banter about enitlement attitudes and who should be getting more attention is wearing me out and getting nothing done. Constuctive comments on things done well and things that need improving are the reason I keep watch on this blog. Maintaining a site for juvenile internet bullying and arguing is not of interest to me or others. Well spoken points pro or con and interesting stories or observations are welcome, endless rounds of bickering are not. Now, shut up and go skiing/boarding:), it is great out there and North goes online in a matter of hours! See ya on the hill.

"The area will be mainly snow free for much of the day on Saturday.
A second cold front crossing the region Saturday afternoon will
reinforce the cold air over the region and the return westerly
flow will again produce heavy lake snows across the region
Saturday night through Monday morning. Total accumulations of up
to two feet additional snow are possible Saturday night through
Sunday night. "

That's from the National Weather Service.

Another artic front is supposed to push in Sunday night and start Lake snows again for Monday and Tuesday.

Can't help but smile at the thought of ripping some powder lines Sunday morning in dumping snow conditions.

That first post was well written, to the point and hit's the nail right on the head!

Safety should be first- both for the jumper and jumpee (sorry)
as either or both being injured is fairly easy to prevent with the obvious and simple steps noted.

I don't use the park, but regardless this seems like a reasonable start to ensuring a safe experience for everyone who does.

Definately agree with that post. In my opinion, if you're not the best freestyler ski or border, you can still be in the park as long as you follow the rules and unwirtten etiquette. There is usually a lineup for the tables, so get in line and wait. If you happen to be up at the top in the lineup, but you're not gonna jump, thats fine. Just tell everybody else that so people arent waiting on you.

Every year I see skiiers and borders who will come off the lift and fly right down to the first table. Thats BS and only gets everyone around you pissed

Now, I have to say that KB gets my upmost respect for getting a high calibre park up that fast. Going from barely getting the barespots covered, to a full park is a hell of an accomplishment.

Thanks

the park looks really sick.

are there any words on when theyll have the big hits open?

as for all this bickering about the first dudes comment, i agree, though, i dont think that people should not be allowed in. i think its fine as long as they are not going off the sides of jumps or cutting people off.

Agree with the first post, the only thing I disagree with is paying for the pass. I think you;ll lose people. I won't go Blue Mountain cause of that very reason. A lift ticket is expensive enough without havin to pay extra just to ride the park.

PARK:
Nice grooming, corduroy looks good, think I may switch over and ski the park area. A couple of gates and use of the features make for a decent GS run. Thanks again !!!!!!!

I went out around 11:00 today and was extremely dissapointed to see that north was closed. Probably some of the best conditions we've seen in years and 60% of the trails are closed. What's the deal with that? Half of the terrain park was also closed for "maintenence", and I did not see a single thing being done. I was looking forward to an awsome day of skiing on my snowday, but it was dissapointing.

A few awns. but not all. South, lift maintanence was needed. Park. E. is planting more rails and building the big hits, that were more like just big rollers the other day, I suspect he was placing snowmaking on North Slopes when you were there. North was closed in part to move around the snow guns that were pulled off for the weekend. Thats all I got. Tomorrow South and North should be open at 4pm. Hope you enjoyed the snow anyway, props for going out and gettin' after it today. Look for some info on the Knuckle Dragger Open later this week.

Just curious on a few things...

Why hasn't the new soundsystem been running lately in the park? It has been advertised on the website that KB got a big new soundsystem for the park, but I have been there a ton of times and haven't seen or heard it.

Also what happnd to that big long yellow phatman rail? That rail was the best feature KB has ever had. You guys are missing the long rails these days.

Can't wait to see the pictures of the big jumps later today on here!!

Photos from last night did not turn out great, but the one on the new post shows the first of three hits in the line. PerhapsE.can tell you about said phat rail. I know he told me he was not near done yet! I will ask E. to write up a description of the existing features and planed additions for the website so it has more useful information. Weekend 8 hr. pass 42.00 (in response to an earlier question) Check kbski.com for a list of rates and ticket options)Sound System, I think it is up there, I will ask about it and see whats up, the 80s retro muzak not enough for ya eh!

firts off, i want to thank the park crew and langman for putting together such a nice park so quickly. however, there is a problem The edges od the jumps, the takeoffs that is, need to be spraypainted. i was out last night and i almost went off the new jump on the right side. also, when hitting the big triple jumps, i could barely see where the takeoffs were. thanks, and keep up the great work.

My friend's snow board was stolen at KB yesterday...when we went to report it we were told there have been alot of thefts this year. Is KB going to look into ways of preventing this...video cameras...or providing a way to lock up your stuff. We only went in for a minute to grab a bottle of water and we put our boards right in front of the windows where we thought they'd be safe...so what else should people do?

7:35 AM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Sucks that people are stealing stuff, but I guess all that can be done is to make sure you lock your gear up anytime you go inside.

Really not much else that KB can do to prevent theft of peoples things.

Now does KB have anything against leaving a lock in a particular spot for the season so that person doesn't need to carry their lock with them all day?

Blogger A.C.M. said...

I am unaware of any policy that would prohibit one from leaving a lock hanging a rack as long as it was not hindering the use of the rack for other users. I suspect that over he summer if a lock were left it would feel the wrath of the bolt cutters teeth. We have both uniformed and undercover security to try and curb theft, but if you put a ton of people together in one place and have thousands of dollars of gear just setting around, something is bound to go missing. If a rider, dressed to ride and looking like he belongs confidently walks up to a board and grabs it, says adios to his friend and heads to the parking lot it's difficult to know a crime is being commited. I have wittnessed securty this past weekend urging kids to lock up boads or stay with them. I hope your ride turns up understand you must be very upset, it is a let down when the community of skiers and riders harbors a few folks who just don't get it. Good luck to you.

Be sure to watch Ebay or Craigslist for your stolen gear! The criminal mind is sometimes not too smart...

i think it was mentioned in this blog recently about painting the edges of the takeoffs for the jumps. i went out today and i could barely see where they were.

Every thing needs longer landings. Especially the last 2 jumps, big jumps and short landings are just unsafe. The fact that almost no one hits them says something about that.
Other than that i have to say im fairly impressed with the park this year.
