How about a two planker open?

Dual Slalom tonight on Slalom Run, GS races Next week, Finals next weekend including two GS races on Moment. All Open to public, two planks required (although boarders are welcome to join in if they like). I know, your talking about Skiercross style action with table tops, 4 up and banked turns. I remember winning a few of those of Moment back in the day, but they were just a poorly set GS course with 4 people racing at once. Perhaps the new park will lend it self to a cross stle event? It seems most of that stle racng comes down to jumping the start gun and fast wax, never a pass. With the recent inclusion into the Olympics I am sure that some actual athlees at the top of thier game or close to it (Daron Rhalves perhaps) will show up the year before and blow by the pack at Nationals to grab some more Oly glory. Many to competitors and even National teams will not allow their top athletes to compete in Skier Cross as the injury rate is off the charts and the traditional events still dominate in the European alpine strongholds. I like the retro board class. I would like to have a rental ski slalom here day. No one on anything but rental skis, no tuning allowed, all on the same size/model.

You say public GS race next weekend? How much to runa few runs? And can a park rat with baggy pants and noodley soft skis enter?

I've never raced but I can imagine it's a pretty good time.

"can a park rat with baggy pants and noodley soft skis enter?"

New GS rules-
Baggy pants = finish switch or face a 2 second penalty!

:)

Come on out, we don't bite!!

I heard kb was installing a high speed quad at north next year

Is this true?

2:35 PM
Anonymous Anonymous said...

Yes, a high speed quad with all the profits from this stellar year.
(that's a joke BTW) Remember that KB had ZERO revenue over the holidays and spent a fortune making snow!?!?!

Why on earth would they install a HS quad for an area that only see's moderate (at best) traffic 2 days a week?

I say re-string the T-Bar next to the race hill. This could be a self serve lift for racers.

acm, why is north closed until 4 every day?

In large part this is a result of the poor early season and exteme cold over the past few weeks. KB hired a large number of lift operators expecting the usual percentage to have found other work or backed out for personal reasons when opening day came along. When a significant opening was delayed lots of them found other gainfull employment, when it got stupid cold, many could not take it and left for less adventursome occupations. Unlike a year round resort we can not keep people employed when the lifts do not turn and have few returning employees for these jobs, it is allways a strugle to fill these positions, they require statemandated training ( afe hours I think) so we can not plug in just anyone to run a lift. No lifties = no lift. South better serves the demographicof our early bird weekday customers so it opens. I know this is a contensious point and will not say that saving revenue on stafffing North for a handfull of early day skiers is not a consideration, but this season staffing the lift itself is the number one reason. We hope to have it open for the rest of week, but its getting cold and we will lose more attendants. Good news for afternoon skiers if it does not open tomorrow morning is... FRESH POW. (sickenly optimistic, I know) Rumour has it some pro riders are around KB all this week, filmng in and around the area, thats all I know about it.

acm, thanks for the explanation and the honesty. We understand the economics of a season like this one and appreciate that KB is doing its best with the hand it's been dealt. As much as I wish north would be open all day, when I showed up at 4 at north last week I was thrilled to find fresh powder to cut through....

"The big challenge for the 06/07 season was to simply get enough ski days to not have to refund money"

Did I miss something? Is there a set number of operating days KB must have before passholders receive a refund? Or is this in reference to programs such as schools and groups which have a set # of outings??

As for the correlation of revenue to expense- kind of. I believe once they spin up the electric meter there is a certain fixed cost to supply power, even if it goes unused. I remember this as a reason Holimont installed thier own power generating equipt. If they wanted to run a lift for one day per month (say for maintainence) they paid a set monthly fee, plus useage.

ACM- Pro riders you say? Dude....We are around every week, you know us from the Molson series and NAR races!!!! LOL!!!!

Does anyone know any details about the big air comp. tomorrow? Times? Registration? Why are these things kept so secretive?

Gotcha Davey, and for the record this is a great topic of discussion.

I'm happy to see KB is still making snow on Holly and others, my hope is that they are fortifying for a LOOOOONG spring season!!

As a long time passholder I would not have expected a refund. I bought a discounted pass early in the season. KB benefits by having my cash early to invest, or use for capital improvements. I get the discount for paying early and not knowing what the season brings. (risk/reward) If it's a lousy season then I have to work to get my money's worth. If not then it cost me pennys a day to ski!!! Either way I am further ahead than buying individual tickets or 10 pack as I average 40+ days a season.
I do understand the business model you spoke of, and think this applies more to the schools, groups and packages that pay for a set number of days.
Hopefully KB won't forget the challenges of early season and will take a long hard look at infastructure and snowmaking improvements ASAP.
Looks to be an awesome weekend coming!

They have been here, don't knowif they are still around. The brought a film crew and lurked around earlier in the week. I believe one of them is a nativ of the WNY area. I am not trying to be cryptic, it was not made public and I expect they wanted it that way. Ifigured some of you on the blog woud have more info on who where and why.

Is there any chance the edges of the takeoffs could be painted? They are nearly impossible to see in flat light, and the takeoff for the first jump is nicely squared off, but why not on the other two?

Yep, I have read many of the articles and each has a different angle. Consider that making the sport less expensive may make it "crowded" as compared to today.
We are pretty lucky to have what we do at Kissing Bridge. Sure, on one hand it's not Killington and on the otherhand THANKFULLY so on weekends because that place is a zoo! Even Holiday is nuts on weekends. I like the vibe @ KB, I know enough of the "regulars" and staff that it's kind of personal in a sense.
I think the 10x formula makes sense when compared to four hour ticket prices. I think we are similar in that the pass is an extremely good value based on how frequently we use it, but I feel we are the minority other than the country club retirees that basically have a private club weekday mornings!!
I think the largest growth segment in the future is families. Bring back families of 3 or 4 all skiing/boarding and this has exponential impact. Three or four times more tickets, lessons, food, etc

So... how about painting the takeoffs?

7:39 AM
Blogger A.C.M. said...

Painted take offs will not be happening, soke to E about it, after a few grromings the whole ramp is infused with the powder or paint, it slows down the ramp and on sunny days the darker colored snow soaks up heat and gets icy, like salting a race course. E. has a ton of experience with this and it takes no effort to spray paint the lip, so I have no reason to doubt him. There is special consideration for large families on Season Passes, a salary cap you could say, not sure of the amount.

Expensive? That is relativelt speaking.

Take your family of 4 to a Sabres game for comparison:

4 tickets in the 200 level = $350
(4 x $87.50 median price) That is $350 for 2 hours...
Don't get me going with comparisons to golf or sailing.

Now compared to bowling, yeah it seems expensive.
