The above link is a sad story concerning an up and coming free rider. I found it very touching and urge you all to chase your dreams, but be careful and aware of the potential consequences, having been knocked out more than a few times over the years this falls into the there but by the grace God catagory.

Sad indeed, but this brings to light the need for additional education on safety for the freeride and park guys, maybe even the race programs as well too.

I'm not saying the park guys (in general) are dangerous, but when your launching air the consequences can be pretty big.

We were riding up the Park area chair lift remembering how we used to get scolded for stealing a shovel and building an 18" jump @ South back when we were kids... Now we have areas providing HUGE gap jumps, rails, etc without making helmets mandatory?!?!? Seems to be a pretty big oversight.

Props to everyone exploring the limits of the terrain and ability- be it in the park, race arena, free skiing, etc but please do so safely!

RIP Asher.

Heard this story a while ago. But I found it disrespectful for the anonymous above to bring up "his" point in this blog. And for further clarification, he WAS wearing his helmet when he fell. He just landed sideways on a switch 360 and took a hard fall, a common thing for freeskiers. This wasn't anyone's fault, or any misuse or lack of equipment. It was a plain very misfortunate accident that can happen to anyone.

I do agree though to be careful, and keep all senses open at all times while out there. Asher was a large loss to our freeskiing community as an upcoming skier. I wish the same fate to noone.

Thanks for clarifying that he was wearing his helmet. Freak accidents can happen anytime. He was doing a "routine" trick, and anything can happen at anytime. Trick was supposed to be a switch 5. But minor details as a switch 5 still isn't a high level jump.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember and to take away from things such as that accident is that a helmet doesn't make you invincible and that you should truly life every day like your last, because ANYTHING can happen at anytime, no matter how routine that thing might be.

Disrespectful?????

How so? It's not like this is a memorial blog for the guy and his family or something. It's not like I said "BAN THE PARK" due to potential for injury.

Man you guys are awfully sensative.

My point is- SOME people (not this particular guy, maybe not you, maybe not me) but SOME people simply do not realize the consequences of the sport- PERIOD.
(and that includes ski, board, park, race, free ski, etc..)

I read that he did have a helmet, that there was safety personnel on hand, that he was experienced, coached, aware of the situation, and apparently was doing all the "right" things.

As you state it was a VERY unfortunate accident which did not seem to be preventable- re-read my post which starts out "Sad indeed".

This furthers my point that in the best situation (meaning doing all the "right" things) accidents DO happen and the consequences of such can and sometimes are catestrophic.

I don't wish any injury on anyone- however folks should be aware and fully prepared for what could and does happen.

Would you know what to do if you witnessed any kind of accident? Do you know where to find a patoller, phone, radio or "HELP" of any kind??

Understanding the consequences, knowing what to do and being fully prepared for an event like this was my point... sorry if that was not clear and that you interpreted it as disrespect.

I gotta agree with the guy above!

Think about it- would you willingly jump off the second story roof of your house? Because that is essentially what some of you choose to do, only with skis on your feet.

Or jumping out of a car @ 35MPH??
Think about that racers!!

Just know your limits and be as safe as you can, that's all.

That dives into a whole 'nother topic though, which is a park pass, which would require people to be aware of those consequences and what actions to take in the event of a severe injury...
